Chester Pruitt

Officer Chester Pruitt (1917-1968 Officer Chester Pruitt (1917- 1968) was the 1st African American police officer in Ft. Walton Beach. He joined police force in 1948 and served throughoutthe 1950-60s. A Great Floridian Plaque in his honor has been erected at the Chester Pruitt Neighborhood Center. 15 Carson Dr. in Ft. Walton Beach.

Mrs. Gloria Jean Tippens launched Okaloosa County’s Head Start program in 1971. The program eventually included locations in Shalimar, Fort Walton Beach, Crestview and Destin. She retired as director in 1997 after 26 years as the program’s director.
